Introducing Bloomswell.... Our first dark roasted guest coffee

I joined Baytown last April and part of my role is to handle all of our customer service queries. One of the absolute joys of my role is hearing how much you all love our coffees—especially our beloved Boggle Hole Dark Roast. Honestly, the number of people who rave about it is amazing!

Now, I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for a good dark roast myself. My morning doesn’t officially start until I’ve got an oat flat white in hand, so when I heard we were looking to bring out a new guest coffee, I couldn’t help but pester Ted, our new roaster who joined us last August. Ted is a magician when it comes to coffee—he lives and breathes it. Luckily, it didn’t take much persuading. I gave him my thoughts, and off he went to work his magic.

And oh, did he deliver. Say hello to Bloomswell, a stunning Brazil Yellow Bourbon dark roast that we’re all incredibly excited about. This coffee hails from the Cerrado region, known for producing some truly exceptional beans. What makes this one so special is that it’s a single origin, which is huge for us here at Baytown, and it’s a washed process coffee. This method really brings out the clean, vibrant flavours of the origin, making it a coffee that’s as delicious as it is interesting.

What makes dark roast coffee so special? For those who love a rich, smooth coffee, dark roast is the way to go. In the roasting process, a dark roast coffee reaches temperatures of 215 to 220 degrees (or higher), which brings out those deep, bold flavours. Bloomswell is no exception—it has gorgeous flavour notes of plum and dark chocolate that really come to life in a cafetière or filter brew. So, if you're a fan of intense, full-bodied coffee, this one's for you.

Darker roasts tend to have less acidity compared to medium roasts, which makes them smoother and, if you ask me, a little bit easier to drink. In fact, the darker the roast, the more the coffee will lose some of its delicate fruity flavours and replace them with powerful, rich flavours—like the chocolatey undertones that make Bloomswell a real treat.

Is dark roast coffee stronger? In a word, yes. Dark roasts are definitely stronger when it comes to flavour. They have a bold aftertaste and a heavier body, so if you like a more intense coffee experience, you’ll love a dark roast. And because dark roasts are smoother, they can be enjoyed without milk, but still work wonderfully with milk—perfect for a latte or flat white.

How do you drink dark roast coffee? Dark roasts like Bloomswell are incredibly versatile. Whether you’re sipping it black, mixing it with milk, or brewing it in a Moka pot, dark roast is a great choice for those who prefer a smooth, strong flavour. While we wouldn’t recommend using dark roasts in your bean-to-cup machine (because the oils can clog the grinder), a classic filter or pour-over will give you a rich, satisfying cup every time.

Whether you're brewing it in a cafetière, filter, or espresso machine, it’s going to pack that punch without losing its essence. I always recommend grinding your beans just before brewing, and if you’re using a cafetière, you’re in for a treat—Bloomswell is particularly dreamy with this method.

Naming the Coffee Speaking of streets, you might know that we love naming our coffees after places around our beloved Robin Hood’s Bay. It’s our little way of bringing the Bay to life for all of you. But naming this one wasn’t easy! With those deep, fruity flavours, we were torn between three names: Bloomswell, Littlewood, and Sunny Place. So, we turned to you, our amazing community on Instagram and Facebook, to help us decide. And, of course, you nailed it. Bloomswell it is!

But don’t worry if you had your heart set on one of the other names—we couldn’t let them go to waste. Let’s just say, keep your eyes peeled because there are some exciting things in the pipeline for this year.

So there you have it—Bloomswell is here, and it’s one to savour. Whether you’re brewing it up on a slow weekend morning or treating yourself midweek, this coffee is bound to make your day a little brighter.

Here’s to great coffee, great names, and an even greater year ahead!

Love, Brooke and the Baytown team x
